Due to the raging debate in the country regarding the congressional push for the legalization of divorce, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) issued a Pastoral Letter entitled, “A Nation Founded on the Family, A Family Founded on Marriage,” to provide guidance to the Catholic faithful and to the nation’s legislators. Though quoting from Sacred Scriptures (Mt 19, 6), the bishops stressed that it is not their intention to impose their views based on religion on the whole citizenry. All they mean is to warn everyone–of whatever religious confession–of the dire consequences of divorce, glaringly displayed in all countries where it is legal—and this, before everyone regrets for having rushed into legalizing it.
